Last year, Crystal Dynamics created one of my favorite games of the year, Tomb Raider. A reboot of a franchise that I am very familiar with, since it’s initial release. The new Tomb Raider looked great, even on the aging hardware of the last console generation. And though console gamers didn’t get the fancy TressFX and high resolutions that the PC release saw, the gameplay and story showed up in a major way and Lara became fresh again, if naïve and vulnerable.
Having thoroughly enjoyed Tomb Raider last year, I wasn’t thrilled about the announcement of a new and improved “Definitive Edition” on new gen consoles. Was this just a gussied up rereleased cash-in? Was there enough here to warrant the infamous “double dip”?
In a press release from Square Enix, Thief (formerly Thi4f, and Thief 4) has been confirmed for realease on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Windows PC in 2014.
Pending pricing announcements from Sony and Microsoft, the title may also refer to those that lurk around corners behind Gamestop hoping to nab next-gen systems at a “discount”. Buyers, beware of water arrows fired from the shadows.
Microsoft has revealed the Xbox One and with it a look at what power the system has to offer. While there is a lot of information to still be gathered here is what we know so far and in parenthesis what the PS4 has advertised as well for comparison:
– Xbox One will have a Blu Ray drive (So will the PS4)
– Xbox One will utilize an 8 Core CPU (The PS4 CPU uses an 8 Core X86 AMD Jaguar
– Xbox One will have 8GB of System Memory (The PS4 will have 8GB GDDR5 RAM)
– Xbox One will offer a 500 GB Hard Drive (Sony is only saying that the PS4 will have a ‘very large’ Hard Drive at the time)
– Xbox One will have 802.11 Wireless with Wi-Fi Direct (The PS4 will as well)
– Xbox One utilizes USB 3.0 (It can be assumed the PS4 will as well.)
– Xbox One will have HDMI in/out (As will the PS4)
These are the comparisons that can be made thus far. More info to come as it develops.

There is a pretty solid rumor going around as offered up by CVG saying that Microsoft is planning a big event for April 26th. It makes sense that this would be the announcement of the next Xbox system. Sony has dished out the first salvo with their PS4 announcement. It looks like Microsoft is planning and slow building towards the end of April for their big reveal.
Well on Wednesday Sony revealed their next gen console in the Playstation 4 and after that most have been wondering how Microsoft and the Xbox would respond.
There has been no immediate word of a set date for the next Xbox announcement or of a ‘counter attack’. I like this. Xbox does not need to compete. Microsoft just needs to put out the best product it can and not use any innovation as a means of comparison.
I watched the Sony press conference. I was not too impressed. It is next gen. Lots of bells and whistles but it does not seem quite what it could or should be and feels more as if it is progression for progression’s sake.
Nothing is set in stone right now as to when we will hear word on the next Xbox but various web-sites have noe been registering that suggest we should be hearing more sometime soon. XboxEvent.com, XboxE312.com and their 2013 Hosting Summit Site have all been locked in and registered. It’s minor news but such things get the ball rolling.
I very much look forward to the press conference Microsoft will put on. They seem to be more in tune with the presentation side than Sony. I’m not hating on them persay I just feel it was an awkward combination of things very blandly displayed. I am interested in Infamous, Killzone and the new Quantic Dream graphics engine. I like the specs and various things to do with the PS4 but that 2 hour livestream just offered me more yawns than jaw dropping awe. Here’s to hoping their showing at E3 is a little more style and substance than what was viewed Wednesday.
